Interesting SEO articles

02:19 pm

I found this today SEO Lessons, whilst actually looking for updated info on how Google and yahoo search results compare.

Shows the importance of various aspects of constructing a search engine optimised web page with lots of comparisonss of various examples.

Next on the list is this 21 Great SEO Tips From Google’s Matt Cutts a nice compilation of SEO info.

Then there is Natural Search Engine which has some interesting stats and further links.

I don't personally search engine optimise too much, I'm currently trying to play the content game and my site stats show a steady gain every week in site visitors 75% are from google.

Perfectdisk and diskeeper comparison

01:50 pm

With the release of perfect disk 8 I recently posted my comparison of perfectdisk and diskeeper.
Originally posted at PerfectDisk 8 Coming Soon - Wilders Security

Smart placement is designed to help reduce future fragmentation, by placing recently modified files at the end of the block of files.

The ONLY issue I have with this placement strategy is that I think perfect disc defrags these recently modified files, which is fine, but then packs them together, just for them to get move about as they are modified.

I-Fasst places files for maximum performance by working out what are the fastest parts of your disc and placing the most (recently I think) accessed files as close the those areas. Even my 1 yr old DiamondMax 80gig would give a max of 7% gain (and I doubt they meant across the entire disc, only at the fastest parts), total waste of defrag effort.

Diskeeper's background defrag is really useful. There is very little overhead, as it does an excellent job of defragging between file access.

I find diskeeper runs once or twice a day for me, but literally only runs for a few Min's a time.

Perfectdisk 8 also includes the ability to do background defragging to a max of once a day, default is every 3 days according to the screenshots I've seen.

I personally like diskeeper's default strategy which is defrag files, and gradually pack them closer and closer together (eg it takes multiple passes to defrag space).

I ran an unscientific test of not just looking at defragging one off , which would be similar to Howard's usage pattern. And of course the one off defrag perfect disc was better than diskeeper. Even after 2 runs perfect disc was better. In-fact diskeeper seemed to never defrag perfectly.

What I did next was monitor the amount of fragmentation after a few days use and found that they have both re-fragmented to a similar level.

I found that running perfect disc daily for one week, that it took a lot longer (twice as long at best) than diskeeper.

IMHO perfectdisk will suit those who defrag less often (eg weekly, monthly) and diskeeper those who are regular defraggers (daily), end of the day they both do good enough jobs at prevent fragmentation which you will notice (which is rare anyhow).

Google Apps for Your Domain

04:27 pm

I have just setup my domains email to be hosted by Google (using the Gmail interface).

Google Hosted Domain

This was quite a straight process, changing the mx records to point to google's in my DNS manager. Then setting up a user account, setup a few aliases and all done.

This is so useful to me, as our web-server doesn't have a mail server and also means not having to use my Gmail account anymore.

New favourite song: Nightwish Tenth/10th Man Down

07:58 pm

Really love the way the chorus powers in.

The lyrics are great as well; from the opening verse:

"
Today I killed, he was just a boy
Eight before him, I knew them all
In the fields a dying oath:
Id kill them all to save my own "

and the chorus:

"
Cut me free, Bleed with me, Oh no
One by one, We will fall, down down
Pull the plug, End the pain, Run'n fight for life
Hold on tight, this aint my fight "

Here's a good live video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aqf1dIiR9eE

Hypnotherapy Keighley and google

09:28 am

Martyn's website, www.hypnotherapy-kly.co.uk is still having problems with google. Firstly it disappeared and now after a month it has reappeared on the google index, but the results are terrible. Google has been crawling this site regularly.
Using google sitemaps we have noticed it complaining about 404 pages. We have a plenty of other sites on this server, some running Joomla, some running other CMS's and non of them are having this problem.

Reading the Bourne Trilogy

12:12 pm

I have Bourne Identity and Supremacy on DVD, nearly finished reading the book, enjoying it so much, iveive ordered Supremacy and Ultimatum to readwww.amazon.co.ukwww.amazon.co.ukogy . This is very rare for me as this is the only fiction book I own. I have a few biographical and the rest are fact books on cars, motorbikes etc.

One thing to note is how different the film and the book are, the who sub plot of Carlos is removed (as noted at wikipedia http:/wikipediaedia.org/wiki/The_Bourne_Identity_%28film%29 ). I think this was a smart choice for the films as it meant they could keep enough detail to make it interesting, being one of the best action thriller type films to come out of Hollywood for years.
